Lilly wiped her forehead and then scowled when she saw her flour-covered hand. She’d worked harder the past two weeks for Bessy than Hank had ever asked of her. Foodstuffs covered her apron. It hadn’t taken Bessy very long to see that cooking had never been on her list of things to do.
“Have you checked the pies?” Bessy’s irritated voice cut in on her thoughts.
Embarrassment crept up her cheeks. “Right away.” Lilly ran to the oven, hunted for the towels, and couldn’t find them. Worse, a little smoke trickled out the oven door. Where are those stupid things?
Bessy trundled past her, picked up the pads hanging on the wall, and jerked open the oven. “You’ve burned my pies.”
If Lilly hadn’t met the Good Shepherd, she would have thrown the silly woman’s precious pies out the window. Seeing the blackened crust, she cringed. “They don’t look too bad.”
Bessy whirled to face her. “Too bad? Just what kind of pies do you cook?”
“None, before today.”
“That is all too obvious. The men will be disappointed. They count on my—”
“Sorry! Not as if I did it on purpose. Besides, I have flour in my eyes.”
Bessy glowered at her. “If Hank hadn’t paid for a month for you, I’d be tempted to toss you—”
“Darlin’, what’s all the ruckus? We can hear you from the dining room.” Cyrus rubbed his wife’s shoulders and winked at Lilly.
He sniffed the air and looked at the pies. “My favorite. Cherry well-done.”
Bessy shoved him away. “Oh, you old varmint. Help me carry the dishes to the table. My boarders are likely starving.”
“Starving for a look at your beautiful helper. You go on and get a seat, Lilly. I’ll help carry the food out.” He grinned at her.
Feeling a bit guilty but very much relieved, Lilly hung up her apron, wiped her hands and face, and left the kitchen. She liked Cyrus. He was a gentle bear of a man.
The table was full except for one seat next to the doctor. Happy to sit by him, Lilly smiled at the eager faces of the men.
As if on cue, they all rose.
Embarrassed, she sidled next to the doctor and looked around. That men regarded her as if she were a lady, still embarrassed her. Although occasionally Carl made rude comments, most of the men treated her as if she were fine china.
Doc smiled and drew back her chair and gestured for her to sit.
Uneasy, she sat, and he scooted the chair to the table.
In unison, all the other men sat.
A flustered Bessy entered followed by a grinning Cyrus.
Hunger rattled Lilly’s stomach. Bessy was a great cook. She waited in anticipation for Cyrus to say the words.
After all had food on their plates, the big man stood. “We thank You, Lord, for this food. Blessings on those who prepared it and those who are to partake it. In Jesus Name, we call on You and welcome Your Grace.”
Her heart sang. Grace. She wasn’t sure what all it meant, but it sounded like such a lovely word.
